Bad Internet Advertising - AT&T Yellow Pages

Print E-mail

Like most people, I can be susceptible to the hard-sell. That's how I got involved in ATT Advertising. I had a free Yellow Pages listing on http://www.yellowpages.com/, and got a call on that fateful afternoon, about 6 months ago. When the salesman told me that I could expect a 70% conversion, I immediatley knew that he was full of it, or didn't know what he was talking about. I had been considering an ad in the printed Yellow Pages, and I guess that was what ultimately lead to my descision. That and some very relentless telemarketing chops. I did insist on the six month contract, even though I could have had a whopping $2/month discount by going for the 12 month contract.

About a month later I got a call from a gentleman who said he was getting phone calls from people looking for my business. We had similar phone numbers, and someone had obviously made a typo. He was, however, unable to get AT&T advertising to make the correction. I called, and after some very confused and confusing conversations, things got straightened out.

Six months, and no additional business later, I called the AT&T Advertising phone number I had been given, to cancel my listing. All I got was a message telling me that the voicemail box was full and that I should call back later. Big red flag, but things weren't as bad as they seemed. I did have another number for billing, and calling that number got me a real person. As I had expected, the records showed I had signed up for the 12 month contract. Luckily they couldn't find the recording of the original conversation to prove I had signed up for 12 months, and they gave me the benefit of the doubt.

For the final cancellation, I was transferred to another salesperson, who tried to talk me into signing up again. When it was apparent that I knew something about Internet advertising and promotion, she gave up and cancelled my account.

AT&T Internet advertising is obviously geared towards small business people who don't know much about Internet promotion, but know the AT&T Yellow Pages name. I could talk about ethics, but the bottom line is that their service is not worth the money. Look into Google Adwords or Microsoft Ad Center for a better dollar value.

I feel your pain, all these big companies with their "Top of mind marketing" are full of it. All their sales people are taught to act ignorant a play dumb. Why do you think these large companies are worth billions. They screw a billion little people at a dollar a piece and there you have it.

They don't sell service and support, they put all the money into the phrase "Yellow Pages" and "AT & T" people are getting hooked on the names and it pisses me off to no end.

What do you mean a 6 month contract. I just did a year contract about two weeks ago and they did'nt even mention a 6 month contract. As well they made me re-record the (by phone contract) because at the end of the recording I said I wanted to know what the cancelation period was. Turns out it is 15 days. I having it out with them now. Got any suggestions.

They only mentioned the 6 month contract after I said "no way" to the 1 year contract. When I tried to cancel, at the end of 6 months, they claimed that option didn't exist, but they lost the recording of the contract, so after about 6 calls over 2 months, they stopped billing and refunded the extra months they charged. Not an easy thing, but, I'd recommend keeping at it. If you called to cancel witin the cancellation period, you should have a shot, but they won't make it easy.

Here's what your contracts say:

3 (b) ...THIS CONTRACT SHALL AUTOMATICALLY RENEW, UNLESS CANCELLED IN THE APPLICABLE MANNER PROVIDED.

3 (c) CANCELLATION / RENEWAL TERMS. (i) Customer may cancel this Contract, in whole or in part, only by written notice signed by an authorized representative of Customer sent by

Not sure how you know what my contracts said... Contract wording wouldn't be so important if they had a valuable service.

Well my AT&T Advertising contract had the autorenewal clause and I think it is all yellowpages book and internet contracts have this in their Terms & Conditions.

When I cancelled my contract I mailed a registered letter to AT&T telling them all services are cancelled and are not to be renewed.

Since cancelling, AT&T has called me almost daily begging me to sign a new contract. These people will not take NO for an answer. I filed a complaint with the St Louis BBB, hopefully the calls will stop soon.

St. Louis was exactly where the initial sales call originated. They never asked me to submit anything in writing when I called, and did end up cancelling the service without me sending them anything. That is why I think my contract might have been different than yours. But yes, it was always the hard sell every time I talked to anyone there. Hopefully your complaint to the BBB will do some good.

As a manager of a Small business owner and dealing with ATT advertisement both on yellow pages, ypconnect and yellowpages.com I will say to any small business STAY AWAY from doing any advertisement with ATT. Stick with a basic bold listing on the book.. and that is it. I guess the book will not stay forever. The worst experience ever. I have done online advertisement with them for over 5years. Lack of accountability, responsability, coordination.

I am a small business owner, same story. I bought into the name and sales talk.

I agree with the comment they don't sell much service, mostly just their name. Their web traffic promises were just that promises. After 6-8 months of no increased business I am preparing my cancellation letter. Their contract makes it very difficult to figure out where to send it.

I have contracted for about a dozen different yellow pages (printed) each year over the past 15 years. They used to all come out for a visit every fall. Then about 3 years ago they started slipping in the auto-renew clause. Then they just quit showing up. It has taken me 3 years to wind down most of my contracts. Now when I sign a new contract I prepare a cancellation letter right up front, dated for the renewal date, and I get the address ect at that time and mail it certified, return reciept, the same month I start the contract.

I have also been duped by these people. Does anyone know a way to get out of the 12 month agreement they pushed on me two months ago? Surely there must be some way.

Unfortunately I haven't heard of anybody pulling that off. Even though my 6 month contract was over, I had a very hard time getting them to stop billing me. In fact I was billed for 2 months after my contract ended. They finally credited me for the amount, but what a pain.

I'm with Katie - I to got the hard sale and now the guy who sold me the ad isn't even with AT&T anymore. I just want out of my contract. My ad went live and had a link to a website in Germany, they took my logo and added a lousy picture to it, they don't return my calls, hang up on me and they will not listen to any kind of reason. I have recieved one call from the ad, they told me to be patient. It's hard to be patient when you're a small business and money is a real issue. Sounds to me like it's time for a class action suite. If anyone has spoken to an attorney, please let everyone here know. This has to be stopped
Christa - AT&T advertising contract   | 97.124.140.xxx | 2010-05-14 12:41:47
I don't know if anyone is still on this stie, but I am looking at the contract I have and it says nothing about cancellation or renewal. We signed on Wednesday, 5/12/10 and have decided to cancel 5/13/10 and AT&T has already threatened us with a lawsuit. They want $1800.00 a month to do internet advertising, which is ridiculous. Anyone have any advise if you are still reading this website?

Sorry to hear about your predicament Christa. Unfortunately I have known many businesses that have been stuck in contracts for AT&T's poor quality Internet advertising service, including a number of attorneys, but haven't heard of anyone successfully getting out of the contract. I don't think there is any way you are going to get your money's worth.

They have a team of Attorneys that are relentless..The sales team know this, so as soon as you sign, they have you...

I am stuck in the internet ad. also. What a joke. I was trying to get things fixed on my internet ad and told my salesperson Chris that I would not renew until my things were fixed. He didnt tell me that my account was going to auto renew and now they wont let me cancel. I told them that they will not get one penny from me. AT&T IS A SCAM!!!! DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THEM!!! AT&T WILL STEAL FROM YOU!!!

The Saleperson told me that I need to approve for them to change my number. I signed all the papers to have that done, but told him I was not going in for my second year. He said he would put my paperwork on his desk in cause I chnaged my mind. Well, he didn't and pushed it thur. I got billed for the second year. I made $800.00 off a $8000.00 ad....This has been a nightmare
